Brigid: Goddess of Fire and Water

An original hand drawn mandala inspired by Brigid, the ancient Irish goddess associated with fire, healing, fertility, poetry and renewal. This piece brings together Celtic mythology, Irish folklore and the symbolism of the land, exploring the many qualities associated with Brigid and the traditions that have grown around her over centuries.

At the center sits Brigid’s Cross, surrounded by intricate Celtic knotwork and concentric circles filled with flowing blue patterns inspired by water. These circles represent Ireland’s holy wells, many of which are dedicated to Brigid and have long been places of prayer, pilgrimage and healing. Water is an important part of this drawing, symbolising cleansing, renewal and the healing power of these sacred places. The circular patterns of the mandala reflect the cycles of life and the connection between the physical and spiritual worlds.

A red ribbon adorns each of the four points of Brigid’s Cross, referencing the Irish tradition of Brat Bríde, in which a piece of cloth is left outside on the eve of St Brigid’s feast day to receive her blessing and protection. Red runs throughout the drawing, reflecting the warmth of fire, the colours of sunrise, passion, fertility and the power of creation.

Radiating from the center is a great star in fiery shades of red, orange and gold. It represents the returning light, the awakening of spring and the creative energy associated with Brigid. Gold brings warmth, abundance and illumination to the design, while the star’s rays symbolise intention, manifestation and new beginnings.

A golden serpent, inspired by the ancient symbol of the Ouroboros, represents the cycles of life, death and rebirth, alongside healing, transformation and regeneration. Its presence reflects the continual cycle of renewal and the interconnectedness of all living things.

The rich green background creates a sense of life and growth, with roses and their twisting stems weaving throughout the drawing. The roses symbolise love, beauty, devotion and fertility, while the bees represent abundance, community and the sweetness of life. Together, they bring a sense of movement, connection and flourishing life to the piece.

Through these layers of symbolism, this drawing brings together the ancient goddess Brigid and the traditions that have grown around St Brigid in Ireland. It reflects the way mythology, folklore and spirituality have become intertwined, with holy wells, red ribbons, fire and the arrival of spring all carrying deep meaning in Irish tradition.

For me, Brigid represents the meeting of fire and water, strength and tenderness, creativity and healing. This piece is a personal tribute to Ireland’s rich spiritual heritage and to the love, fertility, passion and renewal that Brigid continues to inspire.
