The Eternal Feminine

At the heart of this work stands the Venus of Willendorf, one of humanity's earliest surviving representations of the feminine form, created almost 30,000 years ago. She is enveloped in warm ochres, rich reds and earthy browns, a deliberate homage to the traces of red ochre pigment once found upon the original limestone figurine. Red ochre, one of the earliest pigments used by our ancestors, symbolised life, blood, fertility, transformation and the sacred connection between humanity and the earth.

Either side of the Venus are two mermaids, inspired by some of the earliest carvings and  symbols of the Divine Feminine. They embody the mysteries of water, intuition, creation and the liminal space between worlds, acting as guardians of ancient feminine wisdom that has flowed through myth and folklore across millennia.

Encircling the work are Sheela na Gigs, the enigmatic medieval stone carvings found throughout Ireland and Britain. Often misunderstood, these powerful female figures are increasingly recognised as symbols of fertility, protection, rebirth and the untamed power of womanhood. Their presence forms a protective circle around the central figure, creating a dialogue between prehistoric, medieval and contemporary understandings of the feminine.

Behind the Venus, radiant bands of colour unfurl like luminous wings. What began as a spiritual gradient evolved organically into a spectrum reminiscent of a rainbow, suggesting both ascension and emergence. These flowing colours evoke energy radiating from within the figure rather than merely surrounding her, a visual expression of awakening, transcendence and the unseen forces that connect earth and spirit. The wing-like form hints at transformation, reminding us that the sacred feminine is not static, but forever evolving while remaining deeply rooted in the wisdom of our ancestors.

This work weaves together archaeological history, mythology and sacred symbolism, honouring the presence of the feminine throughout human history. It invites the viewer to contemplate the ancient threads that continue to shape our understanding of creation, spirituality and our connection to the natural world.
